The Mystery Of Laughter

You know, there are few things you cannot buy from the market, one of them is laughter. Everyone can laugh, you can also laugh because you have potentials.

By everyone I mean the able-bodied, mentally and physically challenged persons. If babies have the ability to laugh before they ever speak, why can't you laugh?. If you can't laugh then fake laughter until it becomes part of you.

A young lady said that her father only laughs when he is watching his favorite sports league, sometimes late in the night he would laugh hysterically that everybody in the house would wake up from their sleep. Aside that, she said that the only image she has of her father is that of a sad looking handsome man.

How many times do we take our time to laugh with our family, parents, husband or wife, children, friends and neighbors?. You lose nothing by wearing a laughing face!, Laughter can be seen as a skill in solving problems, surely laughter is the best medicine.

Studies show that our response to stressful events can be altered by whether we view something as a 'threat' or a 'challenge'. Humor can give us a more lighthearted perspective and help us  view events as challenges, thereby making them less threatening and more positive.

Why can't you laugh at yourself, at the world and with people around you?, even when it seems we carry the burden of the whole world on our shoulders laughter can help ease the pains and brace us up to strive on.

It is often said that if you laugh, the whole world will laugh with you and if you are crying, the world will seem to be crumbling and crying with you.

It could be the burden of the personality of the man you married, it could be the children or the state of health you find yourself in, you can put a smile on your face, for if children born blind and deaf still retain the ability to laugh, what then prevents us from exercising this often contagious and healing humor?

How laughter benefits your health: Laughter is the shock absorber that eases the blows of life. The ancients greatly appreciated laughter, which they looked upon as a divine gift and a helpful remedy. There are three things which we must learn in order to improve our well being. These are the art of contemplation, laughing and smiling.

Laughing produces rapid rhythmical contractions of the diaphragm. These rhythmical contractions have a healthful effect on the abdominal organs, stimulating their functions and activating the digestive secretions, especially those of the liver. They also modify the rhythm of breathing, stimulates the pulmonary function and the activity of the heart thereby produces a better oxidization.

However it is necessary to distinguish the different types and 'levels' of laughter. We know that laughter can be vulgar, sarcastic, contemptuous, mockery e.t.c. These are not what I mean by laughter. Then there is finally the simple inoffensive comical laughter, such as produced by jokes and limericks, which has no moral value and does not pretend to have any.

Allan Klein said that '' In laughter, we transcend our predicaments. We are lifted above our feelings of fear, discouragements and despair, people who can laugh at their setbacks no longer feel sorry for themselves. They feel uplifted, encouraged and empowered.''

Laughter is the best exercise, the cheapest medicine, the cheapest vacation, the cheapest tonic, it stirs the blood, exercises the chest, stimulates the nerves, chases fear, prevents ulcers, relaxes strangers, wins friends and gives all a cleansing rehabilitation. Arnold .H. Glasgow said that ''Laughter is a tranquilizer with no side effects.

In other words, laughter dissolves tension , stress, anxiety, irritation, anger, grief and depression.'' Like crying, laughter lowers inhibitions, allowing the release of pent-up emotions. After all, if you can laugh at it, then you can live with it. Remember, a person without a sense of humor is like a car without shock absorbers. Try now today to laugh, and you will experience the mystery of laughter.
